United Hebrew Benevolent Society is established.

It is founded by Nathan Strauss and other members of the congregations of Temples Ohabei Shalom and Adath Israel. It purpose is to provide assistance to Jewish residents. The organization moves its office to the municipal charity building at the corner of Chardon and Hawkins streets in 1883.
